Another Harpenden traffic nightmare
By ETher NDE Ltd. | Tuesday, January 25, 2011, 21:11
I've known for some time that there is a problem with the Teleatlas Maps (as owned by Tom Tom and used by Google Maps and others) and the M1 J10 (Kidney Wood Roundabout) and Kinsbourne Green. They seem to think that going down Airport Way, along the Lower Luton Rd, Thrales End Lane and then finally A1081. Yes I have reported it.

A1081 singularity left car route right bus route
See attached screenshot. The straight route is the public transport route using the 321 (that is a bus).
So knowing this read on.
Someone came to see me today using his Tom Tom, he was directed to the Lower Luton Rd, missed Thrales End Lane (0.4 miles from his destination). Reached Batford Corner, the Harpenden sign is bent out of the way so you cannot see it at present. So of course the diversion sign (which doesn't give you any idea where or what you are being diverted from if you are not a local) is very prominent so he follows it (being a trusting soul), rings me as he is going past the cricket ground (and I say that is wrong but he's confident the diversion signs are right), eventually ends up at the end of Common Lane (yes 10.3 mile latter and 0.4 miles from the start of the diversion) and then uses his Sat Nav to come the Rat Run Route through Batford. So I'm estimating that is something like another 20 miles.
So a combination of Tele Atlas and Herts CC. See how much chaos two organisatiosn that don't listen can acheive.
The worrying thing is that this or similair is repeated probaly 100's of time a day.
Comments
OK Adam at Tom Tom
This problem is still not fixed and I had to direct two people today around the Tom Tom singularities (there are definitely two on the A1081).
Rgds
John
PS Will also send this too TeleAtlas.

ReportI've done a bit of investigation of this and find on Google Maps on the A1081 between Harpenden and The Kidney wood Roundabout there are two discontinuities in the map that result in crazy routing (well not quite as crazy as HCC's attempt).
One is as The Pleasance between the two entrances and the other half way between Peperstock Lane and Kennel Lane.
At both these points Google and presumably other users of the Teleatlas mapping such as TomTom .
So whilst at first sight it helps traffic congestion it as a whole has the opposite affect as it forces traffic down extremely narrow lanes.
