My gut feeling is that this restaurant should get 5 *s. The concept is excellent – locally sourced food in pleasant surroundings! Having been there three times now it always fails to earn the *s. When it is quiet it works well but when it is busy it starts to fall apart. On our first and third visits we received some rustic bread with a virgin oil/balsamic vinegar dip followed quickly by the starters. When they were busy we waited nearly an hour for the starters BUT no bread to absorb the wine. The other problem is that when it is busy you have to queue for the loo after squeezing your way through the tables – there are just too many for the number of staff and it also feels crowded. Talking about the staff the head waiter does take time out to talk to the customers. However, when my partner requested a slight variation it was followed by what can best be described as a Faulty Towers moment. He quickly recovered but it happened. On to the food. This is generally excellent. The pate starter is particularly good as is the ‘bacon and cheese’ porridge – it is far better than it sounds. The only meal that has really disappointed was the Harpenden stroganoff. The beef is described as rare breed – it is also rare to find in what is virtually a vegetarian mushroom based stroganoff. On another occasion my steak was excellent and done to perfection. My partners was also pleased with her goat’s cheese strudel(?). Overall worth a visit when about half full but could do better.

Husband and I went last weekend. The Pate Platter was excellent (and so fresh), our bangers and mash & Goat cheese struedel there both the best we ever had. I really like the local produce concept, something we didnt know about before going but were pleasantly surprised to see on the menu. Being vegetarian I really liked that their were a couple main options for me which werent risotto. That Little Place has become our new favorite.

a charming independant restaurant.
My wife and i went on a thursday evening. We asked for a booth in advance and the staff were happy to oblige even though there were only two of us. I had the prawn starter and the goat curry special both of which were exellent. My wife had the gravadlax and the stroganoff and enjoyed both but couldn't finish her main.
The decor and atmosphere are both very good and the prices are reasonable. A special mention should be made for the owner/propriator who took the time to chat to us for several minutes and really made us feel special. He picked up on it being our anniversary and, though we didn't have desserts he brought out an homemade cake with a candle. It really made our night.
A slight negative, there is only one toilet and i had to queue. Apart from that a great evening, we will be returning.
That Little Place has charming service, good food and some lovely little touches such as the beer which is brewed on site!
We went on a Friday night for dinner. There were 4 of us and we were taken to a table in one of the 'booths' in the corner- it was very hot and cramped for 4 adults, but when we asked the waitress moved some tables and moved us to a table nearer the door...much better!
The meal started off very well and the starters were lovely- my mackeral pate was beautiful and the mushrooms were fabulous.
The main courses were average...unfortunately the Tuna was overcooked and the strogonaff wasn't what was expected as the meat seemed to be shredded instead of cubes of beef..the flavours were good though! The boar sausages come highly recommended by my father in law, and the leekand potato parcel nwas tasty (a word of warning...the side dishes are very generous so don't overorder like we did!!!)
This independent restaurant is worth a visit. It's good value for money and, although not fine dining, there are some good dishes on the menu!
A great restaurant to have lunch when time is pressing, The Little Place may have a small name but it certainly punches above its weight in terms of food and service. The express service is friendly and their food is always tasteful, and features all kinds of world cuisine.
