Went to Harpenden's Old Cock last night with a large group (about 30 of us.) The pub has a good feel about it and the bar was very busy, but our food was disappointing. It was served buffet style (perfect for a large group) and the service was good, although we didn't see our promised dessert! The starters were a mix of Indian pieces, which were fine apart from the samosas being a little overcooked. The rice with the main was perfect and the naan was ok, but the curry lacked flavour and was far too funny. The chicken was tender and there were a few bits of mixed pepper thrown in, but the sauce was far from being a curry...very disappointing!

We decided to try the Old Cock Inn, harpenden, on a Sunday night and were stuck by how many regulars adorned the bar-a great sign! The service was good and the pub is comfortable and tonight we had the added bonus of a dj.
The menu looks good...although we weren't eating.
Will definitely be going back and trying the food next time!
I came here after seeing a scallop and black pudding rissotto advertised on the board outfront. The risotto was pants. It wasn't rissotto rice (it was more like rice pudding) and the three ingredients were in seperate piles on the plate and it wasn't very nice. Howewver I followed that with the game pie which was HUGE but quite tasty and my wife went for the fish platter wich was EVEN BIGGER! Neither of us had any chance of finishing our meals and I think more than half got left behind. Better to have too much rather than too little I suppose but still a shame to leave so much behind. Flavours were good though and we would be happy to dine there again.
Also mention should be made of the staff who were friendly and chatty. The landlady Nicki, came and chatted to us for a good while and made us feel special.
The beers were well kept though a greater range would have been nice. The interior is traditional pub and cozy.
A nice pub
My family and I had a wonderful experience at the cock this sunday. The staff were friendly, attentive and very accommodating for small children and prams. Excellent and varied menu, including a fantastic range of roast dinners which were thoroughly enjoyed. The pub decor, notably the open fires, adds to the service to produce a warm and cosy atmosphere. Would definitely recommend for a nice family trip out

The Old Cock Inn is situated on Harpenden High Street, run by proprietor Niki Hackett and her warm and friendly team. It is a 16th Century public house, with three roaring fires, a homely feel with quality ales and fine wines. Food is served 7 days a week, with a variety of daily specials and wonderful Sunday Roasts. Bookings are advised and they are able to cater for any function. Once a month there is live music on Saturday Night and in the summer there is a wonderful beer garden in which I strongly recommend enjoying a chilled glass of white wine.
