Thank goodness it’s September! Why? Because now it feels like it’s legitimate to put the heating on! I don’t know about you but I’m itching to crank it up. Gone is the summer duvet and back on the bed is the heavy comfort of a 10+ tog.

Despite a last surge of sunny days, the end of summer is here it seems and we’ve had several bouts of heavy rain recently to wash it away. At the Barns Broom weather station on the Rothamsted Research site, an impressive 32.8mm of rain was recorded on 25 August, but if you thought that was a downpour, the record for Harpenden stands at 72.1mm, which was recorded on 15 September 1968. In terms of temperature, Harpenden witnessed a dip below double figures, on 6 August, when the minimum air temperature was recorded at 9.4 degrees. Brrrr…

So hands up Harpenden, have you succumbed to putting your heating on early this year? Or should we layer up, think of the planet and conserve our energy? As a nation, we love to talk about the weather so why not tell us what its impact has on you locally, here on Harpenden People?
