Just noticed that Swanns Travel Goods have gone! The store is completely empty (they have had a half price sale recently.) What a shame that another of our 'independent' stores has gone. With argos going in a fortnight that'll be two new empty units.

After talking to other retails who occupy the same end of the High Street I have discovered that Swanns have only closed for a refurb. They need to change the sign in the window though, which just states that the store is now closed!!

Sure I have seen a branch in Watford as well although it was a few years ago. Bit of a trek that so only get to Watford every few years! Could be convenient if you are a footie fan.

Neighbour's wife told me this evening that I had been misinformed and that the St. Albans' branch of Swanns has also closed. Over the years I have brought various items from them. I still have luggage brought over a decade ago! My partner brought some from a large chain store and we took it to Dark Lane last summer. Swanns will be missed.

She also told me that Challis is also closing. The official reason is retirement but she did wonder if increasing rent and rates combined with competition from the newer ladies' wear shops had hastened the event. The rate local shops are closing is starting to get worrying.
