Working with a local artist, Melissa Caneppele, and supported by Herts Youth Services the tunnel is alive with images personally chosen and painted by volunteers from the local schools in Harpenden.
Cllr Nicola Linacre, Town Mayor, said: "The imagination of these young people is amazing. It is a sea of colour in what was a dull and dingy part of the town. Well done to all concerned, a wonderful achievement. And a special thank you to our Youth Town Council Officer, Jean Hamilton, leading the way with a paint brush in hand."
Others who helped this project to be so successful include volunteers from CMP, teachers and students from Sir John Lawes School, volunteers from The Oval and Rotary Club and two local ladies who gave up a day to assist.
A local painter Mick Akehurst assisted in between jobs as well as Karoline Mileham, a local business woman, who completed a grand job of the town crest.
The council thanked Harpenden Trust and Waitrose for their donations toward costs and Herts Pressure Washing for their free clean.
