Clearly Inferior to Harpenden Interior design business!!
By ikati5 | Thursday, May 26, 2011, 19:53
While working today as housekeeper at one of Harpenden's finest houses, I over heard an employee of a Harpenden interior design business in Leyton Road, make a derogatory and insulting comment about me: While talking to his superior, he was explaining that his client was out and he was having to deal with myself and a list that had been left, having been asked a question, his response was: 'I don't know, I'm talking to the tail!'
I was incredibly shocked to hear this and quite frankly appalled that he should be so rude about me, I work extremely hard in my position and was very upset at this comment.
I am not entirely sure if the comment is offensive just to me, being of inferior stock, or whether it also implied that my boss, the client was not particularly highly thought of. Not sure if I should tell them.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Cryztal,
Thank you so much for your comments, You have made me feel so much better, understanding how 'things' are for some of us in Harpenden. A lot of people have been sympathetic to the way I feel an almost disbelieving at first, that the said company would be so rude and disrespectful, but no- one has motivated me to do more like your comments have, Thanks again, I will let you know what happens.

ReportHi Ikati, I am appalled by his comments, although sadly I am not surprised. Harpenden seems to breed such rude people, either those who have money and look down their noses at everyone else whom, they perceive, does not....or those who work for someone who they think has money, and therefore feel they are in some way superior to us lesser mortals who walk the streets of the town.
I would most definately write a letter to the shop - perhaps also get your boss to add his or her comments to the letter. I realise that it will have little effect because, as you say, the employee was talking to the shop owner when he made the rude, borderline racist, remark, and therfore the shop owner knows what was said and clearly condoned the comment, otherwise he would have reprimanded the employee directly.
However, after you have sent the letter, I would then also circulate it to the local Harpenden Town Councillors. Those people who are always so fond of telling us what a kind, caring community we live in !
And then I would send your letter to all the local newspapers - am sure the shop could do with the publicity !
At the very least, this may point out to the shop owner the need to have a rethink on staff training and manners. In these difficult economic times I am sure even a shop such as his does not want to lose business because of a bad reputation.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.

ReportThank you for your comment, everyone I have told has said the same thing, that it was very rude and not what you would expect from a highly regarded local business. It is no good me telling the shop because the comment was made to them on the telephone so they were well aware of it. I will discuss it with my boss though.

ReportI would let them know as I'm sure this is not the kind of reputation they wish to have; they are a well thought of Harpenden Company and will want to ensure that their level of customer service is high.
